Where are you now?

Two starting points, one method. Your coach confirms where you begin during the try-out.

Learning freestyle · Freestyle Introduction

You swim breaststroke and want to learn freestyle

  • Body position, the rhythm of arms and legs, and breathing, built up one step at a time.
  • Snorkel work can separate the stroke from breathing first, so each settles before you combine them.
  • Your coach may start with your breaststroke, to show one measurable improvement you can then carry over.

Starts once you can swim 100 metres breaststroke on your own.

Improving freestyle · Freestyle Improvement

You already swim freestyle and want it to feel easier

  • Refine your technique so each stroke costs less effort.
  • Find a breathing rhythm that stays calm over longer distances.
  • Build a distance you can sustain, at a pace that suits you. Familiar exercises can go quickly.

How coaching helps

Small changes you can feel

When freestyle feels hard, breathing is rarely the whole story. Body position, timing and how much effort each stroke costs matter just as much. Your coach looks at the whole stroke and picks one change at a time.

  • Every exercise has one clear aim and a way to check it yourself.
  • Your coach explains why a change matters, then lets you feel whether it worked.
  • You leave each lesson knowing exactly what to practise on your own.

An example

From wet to dry

Your coach explains what your arm does above the water. Then you notice the moment your hand moves from wet to dry, and touch your shoulder on the way forward. You can feel whether each small step worked, without having to picture joint angles.

Between lessons

Practice is where freestyle settles in

Your membership includes the club, so you can come swimming as often as you like, during the club’s swimming hours. Use those swims to repeat what your coach showed you, at your own pace. Swimming twice a week does not have to mean two lessons.

Special Sports, Amstelveen
No reservation needed. Mon–Thu 07:00–23:00, Fri 06:30–22:00, Sat–Sun 08:00–20:00.
Clubsportive, Amsterdam Zuidas
Reserve in the Clubsportive app. Mon–Fri 06:00–23:00, Sat–Sun 08:00–21:30.

Your own swims are without a coach. The pools are usually calm: in our experience, two or three people sharing a lane already counts as busy.

Your route

A flexible route to 1 km and beyond

There’s no fixed sequence. Your try-out shows where you start, and you move on when you’re ready. Some swimmers go straight to breathing and rhythm, or to Improvement.

  1. Freestyle IntroductionBody position and the rhythm of arms and legs. A snorkel can help you shape the stroke before adding breathing.Common start if you’re new to freestyle
  2. Breathing and rhythmBreathing joins the stroke once it feels steady.
  3. Freestyle ImprovementRefine your technique, find an easier rhythm and build a distance you can sustain.Common start if you already swim freestyle
  4. 1 kmOne kilometre of continuous freestyle, on your own.
  5. 3 km and beyondFor distance, fitness or an event. Your goals set the direction and the pace.
How long does it take?

From no freestyle to 1 km, our coaches plan for roughly 3 to 6 months privately or 7 to 9 months in a group, swimming twice a week. Everyone’s pace differs, so treat this as a guide, not a promise.

Amsterdam Zuidas
About 25 m pool. Useful when you’re building distance. Private lessons mostly during the working day.
Amstelveen
About 15 m pool, around 31 °C. The most after-work private lesson times.

Beyond one kilometre

Keep developing with Swim Workouts

Not currently running

Once freestyle feels like yours, the next step depends on what you want from swimming: fitness, distance, a triathlon or simply a routine you enjoy. Swim Workouts are structured training sessions at three levels, with technique still part of every session. Personal coaching can continue alongside for any specific goal.

Intermediate

Build stamina and technique for longer swims, mixing breaststroke and backstroke variations.

Advanced

Freestyle and overall endurance, for steady, efficient distance swimming and triathlon beginners.

High Intensity

Sustained freestyle at higher speeds, including sets of 1.5 km and more, for experienced swimmers and triathletes.

Already a confident swimmer or triathlete? Private coaching is available now at both locations. Mention your goal when you book your try-out, and we’ll advise the right starting point. About the levels

Freestyle questions

Do I need to swim freestyle already?
No. You can start from breaststroke (100 metres on your own) or improve the freestyle you already swim.
I run out of breath after one length. Is that normal?
Very common. Often the cause is not only breathing but how much effort the whole stroke costs. That is exactly what your coach looks at.
Is this only for triathletes?
Not at all. Most people want to swim for exercise and enjoy it more. Preparing for an event is welcome too.
Can I practise between lessons?
Yes, as often as you like during the club’s swimming hours, on your own. At Clubsportive you reserve in the Clubsportive app; at Special Sports you just come. Your coached lessons stay the number in your plan.
Private or group: which is better for freestyle?
Private suits you if you want full attention or have a deadline. Duo works well with a partner at a similar level. Small freestyle groups are being planned; let us know if you’re interested.

Find out what one small change can do.

In 30 minutes your coach sees where your freestyle is now and shows you the first step. Whether you continue is up to you.
